We all have a secret horror. And as spouses, we’re always pulling back the curtain on each other’s secret horror, like a masked, chainsaw wielding agent of death. Let me explain what I mean. What if you grew up with a parent who was too depressed to care much about you or be responsive to your needs? From childhood you’re fighting against this pattern of disappointment, and your secret horror becomes that no one will ever actually make an effort to meet your needs. So everytime you see your husband parked on the couch while you’re chasing a naked toddler with a romper in hand, you panic, and bark at him, not knowing that his secret horror is criticism and failure, which causes him to seek further escape and solace with his Playstation. And thus, we torment each other, in a wretched attempt to fend off our personal torment. Learn more on this week’s podcast episode.
